My painful experience with Macbook began after the second month—it would shut down randomly without any warning. I sent it in for repair, got it back, but the same problem occurred after 2
weeks, so I sent it in for repair again. And now, 6 months later, my Macbook started screaming one day when I woke it up, and then the screen went completely dark.

Apple Care people told me that the video chip in my Macbook is broken, and they recommended me to repair it (again) despite my request to replace it with a new one. In fact, what I really want is to get my money back because after my terrible Macbook experience, I am convinced that Apple makes crappy products.

Not to mention that right after I sent in my Macbook for repair, my I-Pod started skipping every song (and only songs) that I've bought from the I-Tune music store, which is another Apple mystery I yet to find out.

Despite all the Mac v. PC commercials that makes Mac look like a super genius, my advice is DON'T BUY IT, especially Macbooks. And for those Mac-lovers, my advice is to get an extended warranty—after all the pain and grief I've suffered, I didn't spend a penny for repairing my Macbook because I am under the "Apple Care Protection Plan", how
wonderful!

Bizarre Dream

I had a dream a few days ago, and it was about the board of bar examiners hosting a live show to announce the result of the bar exam. The show started by announcing the result of one jurisdiction, followed by a documentary regarding the history of the bar exam, and how the board wrote the exam. I kept waiting for them to announce the result of my jurisdiction and became annoyed that the documentary went on and on. Then I woke up and never knew the ending.

Well, I guess American Idol is messing with my head! I’ve always loved watching singing competition shows, and I actually followed this season’s American Idol from the audition parts. (By the way, I am so disappointed that my favorite contestant AJ got voted off last week.)

So this is my post-bar story, a bizarre dream influenced by the waiting period anxiety and my American Idol obsession, ha!

The Nervousness Comes and Goes

The DC bar exam is now 5 weeks away. Well, since I was always the bigger girl growing up (yeah, fat Dorothy) until developing my interest in fitness, I'd love to share some tips to keep everybody fit & healthy.

1. Eat breakfast—get your metabolism going

2. More meals in much smaller portions—never hungry, yet never full

3. Count calories (but don’t go crazy)

4. Less processed food—whole grains (rice, oatmeal) are better than bread and pasta; fruits are better than juice; snack on baby carrots/yogurts/nuts instead of chips/ice cream/candies

5. Good postures all time

6. Run—this is a no-brainer, the more you run, the more calories you burn. I usually log 10~15 miles per week.

7. Do Yoga/Pilates—Well, I don’t do it on a regular basis, but I’d pick up Yoga/Pilates moves on magazines and try them while stretching.

8. I feel abnormally normal, and I still went to work as usual. I figured that I'll pass the bar eventually, it's just a matter of time. But anyways, congratulations to those who passed because you are now a real attorney; congratulations to those of us who didn't pass because the loooong wait is over.

I had gone through some hard times a while ago, but I am lucky to have strong support from my friends and my sister. In addition, I am currently working with a fun group of people in DC. And I have come to realize that nobody has a perfect life, but we learn to make our lives better. One of my colleagues said, "if one little thing makes you happy everyday, you'll be so much happier after a year." I take this saying by heart because after all, life is still beautiful.

Rock Climbing

I went rock climbing by the Potomac River yesterday, which was the most physically challenging thing I have ever done in my life.

Everytime I hook the climbing gear on, I would hear a voice in my head--why did you put yourself in this situation! And sure enough, the very first time I tried, I totally got stuck half way through (or maybe just 1/5 through) the top. There's nothing I could hold on to, and the river is flowing underneath. Someone had to assist me at that point, but I eventually made it to the top. The picture on the buttom was my third try to climb, which went pretty well, but I was still very very nervous.

So today, I spent almost an hour just to get out of bed because my whole body is in pain. I am proud of myself though, and I changed all of my profile pictures in the cyberspace to show-off lol My friend John Chen wrote me a comment on myspace--"wow thats a cool profile pic, it looks very mission impossible ish...so you know, if you can't find a normal job, you can always get one of those top secret agent jobs like tom cruise."

Thanks for the comforting comment, and thanks for those who introduced me to climbing.

Career Test

Your Career Personality: Idealistic, Service-Oriented, and Future-Oriented

Your Ideal Careers:

Alternative health practitioner
Architect
Environmental lawyer
Librarian
Magazine editor
Museum curator
Novelist
Nutritionist
Photo journalist
Playwright

The Quick and Dirty Career Test

I really want a job now, all of those would work.

Time to Go

Hiroshi's wedding at Hawaii was beautiful
Haning out with Esthefani, Benji, Hector, and Steve at Waikiki beach was tons of fun
Spending time with my relatives in Taiwan was...a lot of food
Catching up with my good friends from elementary school, high school, and college was SUPER--everybody would come out because "Deng-Deng is in town!"
Yay I feel like the cool kid

Now it's time to go again.
LSAT

Penn State—Dickinson School of Law.

Law School

Post NY Bar

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; bar exam at the Javits Convention Center in NYC is something you never want to do again. I don’t know how many people were there, but my exam number was close to fourteen thousand, and I wasn’t even at the end of the room. Not surprisingly, the restroom line for both men and women were LONG, and everybody in line would start to panic when time is almost up. In order to avoid using the bathroom, I forced myself to drink just a few sips of water for the whole morning. And I believe most people did the same thing. So at the end of each section, we were thirsty, cold, hungry, and desperate to get out of the room. BUT, we had to stand next to our seat and wait for people to collect our test, give us an exit ticket, and we’ll have to turn in the exit ticket when we actually walk out...

I am glad the bar exam is over, even I don’t feel too good about it, and might need to do it again. The only word I would have recognized was my name, and I prayed that I don’t hear it from Professor Farrior’s mouth.

So good morning everybody, I am Dorothy Deng from the class of 2006. Pardon my English because it is not my native language. If my accent bothers any of you, please bear with it for a short while. As I promised to Jerry and Tammy, I will keep this speech under 5 minutes.

But for those of you who think I am doing okay so far, please give all the credits to you, the students, faculty, staff, and friends of the Penn State Dickinson Law School community here in Carlisle. Because without your support and encouragement, there is just no way for someone like me, who comes from overseas, not feeling comfortable speaking English, not knowing much about the American society, to make it this far in law school, and be standing here right now.

After three years of law school here, I have to say that I not only learned a lot about the U.S. legal system, but have also learned some practical knowledge and interesting facts.

For example, in professor Gildon’s Criminal Procedure class, I learned the 4 ways to maximize a citizen’s right. First, say officer I surrender; second, run naked for some privacy; third, always ask officer are you asking me are you telling me; and fourth, which is the most important one, always always say I want a lawyer. And also in Advocacy I, I learned that public speaking is the second scariest thing for an average person, which is only ranked after snakes.

In Professor Carbeannoue’s contract class, I learned that Arbitration rocks. In Professor Fieldman’s Appellate Practice, I learned to always file court documents on time and follow every single rule. In Professor McKrea’s Trust and Estate, I learned that we should always write a will, and maybe hire law school graduates from other law school to be your secretaries. In Professor Knox’s Environmental law classes, I learned that half the species will be gone during our lifetime. I know this sounds depressing, but one can still be happy if he has three lovely daughters.

But the most important thing I’ve learned here at Penn State Dickinson is that, we can all get anything we want, but the degree of how desperate we want it will determine who gets the best. And of course I learned this from my experiences of getting a carrel in the library.

Back when I was a first year, I cut my vacation short from Taipei and got back to Carlisle early for putting my name, and my friends’ names on paper to occupy a carrel; then the rule changed so I camped at the library for three days, and would run to my carrel if I see Professor Fox walking around; then the rule changed again, so I lined up at the door for 5 hours and raced to my targeted carrel when the bell rang. I always got my targeted carrel or at least I’d get one in my targeted area. But of course, there are people who always get better carrels. They cut their vacation shorter, or they start lining up at the door the night before.

So, my point is, receiving rankings in law school is like occupying a carrel in the library. The degree of how a person is desperate to get a super ranking will determine who gets the best. On the other hand, as long as we stay on top of all the readings, writing assignments, and engage in lectures and discussions in class, we all should feel pretty good at the end of the day, even without being at top 10% of the class. But now I really have to clarity something, the majority of you have a better ranking than me. And no I don’t have a job lined up for me after graduation. So I can’t give out any bar exam-taking or career advises. However, I can offer some tips to keep your body fit.

Tip number one, don’t starve; don’t gorge. And of course I’d love to have Fay’s country kitchen breakfast special; Mesenno’s pizza; ice cream from Massy; tons of wings at the Hanover Grill for under 5 dollars, and fried mushrooms at the Carlisle Diner after having some drinks at the Gingerbread man. No we don’t deprive ourselves from having tasty food and good times with friends, but make high calorie food the exception, not the general rule.

Tip number two, always schedule time to exercise at least three times a week. The majority of us will have a busy career in the near future, but don’t let career become the proximate cause of all kinds of health problems. There are ways to exercise efficiently with extremely low cost. Just get a pair of running shoes and jog outside, order a kickboxing or Yoga DVD, or do jump ropes.

I know that everybody will forget the most part of this speech very soon, but if you want to remember anything, please remember these two tips of staying fit. First, don’t starve; don’t gorge. Second, always make time to exercise at least three times a week. By the way, congratulations to Hiroshi for quit smoking.

Finally, I want to especially thank Esthefani and Tammy for always being there for me and treating me like their sister. And now, in conclusion, we’ve made it through law school, and today is our day to celebrate with our friends and family. Congratulations class of 2006.

So What's Up

1. I am done with all of my exams and papers in law school. As for now, I am working on my graduation speech.

2. My graduation is Saturday, May 13th. Since my sister Grace is graduating from the University of Virginia on the following Saturday, my parents are flying from Geneva to the United States to attend both of our commencement ceremonies.

3. Grace and I are moving into our new apartment at Falls Church, Virginia.

4. I will be taking Bar-Bri classes at George Washington University and studying for the New York Bar exam from May 22 to July 25.

5. I don't have a job offer yet, but hopefully I'll find one around the Metro DC area after I take the bar.

I've also started to pack my stuff in the Cartilage. And I've noticed a few things:
1. I have more shoes than I thought I do

2. It's amazing that my small room can hold so much stuff without looking overly packed.

3. It's scary that one person can create tons of junk over three years.

4. Working out at the gym really pays off when it comes to carrying boxes around

Determined

I was looking at pictures taken back in my first year of law school. Not surprisingly, I look younger in those pictures, which is actually fine; however, I've really gained some weight…and that bothers me for sure.

Well, I know I look fine despite the extra pounds, but I really want to cut at least 5 lb and get my body toned before graduation, which is an absolute picture-taking event from the beginning to the end.

This gives me almost 4 weeks to reach my goal—I know it's do-able.

Exercise
I am always good with exercising. I lift at the gym 3 times a week, and I do cardio training at least twice (usually 3 times) a week for 30 to 50 minutes. But there's always room for improvement.

1. Record the weights I lift and systematically build up muscle strength. I used to be good with writing everything down, but I started slacking ever since I lost my notebook at the gym a while ago…
2. Add 5 minutes to both the warm-up run and easy cardio session after lifting
3. Don't skip legs day at the gym. And special thanks to Mentecky who inspired me to start doing legs again.

Eating
I have good eating habits in general, but rejecting cookies is just very difficult for me.
1. General Rule: Eat 6 meals a day, 150~300 cal per meal, approximately 1200~1400 cal intake total. Alternative: Just count the total cal intake
2. General Rule: water and coffee only. Exception: alcoholic drink when going out
3. No junk food, especially sweets and fried stuff
4. No eating after 8:30pm—Water and coffee (if desperate) only

Okay lets see what'd happen…

Would you date a younger guy?

I was reading my friend John Chen's Xanga page and saw his question of the day: "If you are a 23 to 25 year old girl reading this, would you prefer dating someone your age or an older guy?"

The first thing that crossed my mind—Damn, I am not even eligible to answer his question because I just turned 26 on April 6th.

The second thing that crossed my mind—How come I've NEVER dated an older guy?

As a 26-year-old “girl” who went on dates with mostly younger guys, I have to say it's the maturity that matters and really not the age per se. But certainly, there's a bigger chance that the guy is more mature if he is older.

But you know what, I really want to say something nice about younger guys.

Younger guys are energetic and fun, so they make you feel younger too. I also think that guys who would go for older girls tend to be more confident. At least they are not intimidated by the girl's age and life experiences.

Also, younger guys won't act like your dad and tell you want not to do!

What Sex And The City Character Are You?

Which Sex and the City Character Are You?

Congratulations! Our professor assigned us to read several trademark infringement cases regarding confusing domain names.

The fact of these two cases just cracked me up…

1. In Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. v. Bucci, 42 U.S.P.Q. 2d 1430 (S.D.N.Y. 1997), the defendant, who is a host of “Catholic Radio”, registered the domain name plannedparenthood.com and created a website containing anti-abortion and anti-contraception materials. As a result, users looking for birth control information would be directed to a book titled “The Cost of Abortion”.

2. In People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) v. Doughney, 263 F. 3d 359 (4th Cir. 2001), the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sued Michael Doughney after he registered the domain name peta.org and created a website called “People Eating Tasty Animals.”

Haha, what a great name for a website—people eating tasty animals

No more procrastination; no more excuse

Things I REALLY need to do

1. Okay, I just don't want to say it directly, but the truth is, I hate Valentine's Day.

Good couples are happy everyday, and they exchange flowers, cards, and gifts any time they want. But single people like me don't get those things most of the time, which is totally fine except on Valentine's Day, when all kinds of commercials remind the public that it's time to either purchase or receive something sweet.

Well, it's not like I never get anything sweet, just sweet things don't seem to last, at least as applied to me (so far). But I know I'd meet my perfect valentine one day. Someone fun; someone I can have good conversations with; someone I can run and play together. Most important of all, someone who truly appreciates everything about me though I am blunt, fobby, and sometimes lack of common sense…

My Destiny for 2006

When I was reading Marie Claire on the step machine today, the 2006 Horoscope prediction caught my eye.

“Aries excels at creating order out of chaos—exactly your destiny for 2006!”

Damn that is accurate, at least for the chaos part.

The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow

I was sorta depressed a while ago. It's to a point that I could just cry if I start describing how I feel inside. Luckly that didn't happen. The reasons were also pathetic...No job offers, plus soon to lose the privilege of putting "law student" as my occupation on forms. No boyfriend, even I hate to admit that the fact actually made me sad.

Then I got really busy with random things in school. Bearing my responsibilities I'll say it is, which I am ok with, but burns me out a lot of the time.

It's good that I sing to myself though, ha.

The sun will come out, tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar
That tomorrow, there’ll be sun
Jus’ thinkin’ about, tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs and the sorrow
’til there’s none

When I’m stuck with the day that’s gray and lonely
I just stick out my chin and grin and say, oh--

The sun will come out, tomorrow
So you gotta hang on ’til tomorrow
Come what may...

Tomorrow, tomorrow
I love ya, tomorrow
You’re always a day away

I am fine now. It is a time people usually spend at home with their families. As for me, I can't remember either the location or the year that my family actually had our Thanksgiving dinner together last time. Maybe it was my senior year in high school when all of us lived together in Bethesda, Maryland? I'll just say it is.

I remember on that Thanksgiving Day, my dad and I were grocery shopping at Giant for the big meal. A local news reporter approached us and asked why we were buying steak instead of turkey. Although the answer was, "we like steak betterthan turkey", the real reason was that, as a very Fobby family, nobody knew how to deal with a turkey. The news reporter wanted to take some shots of us making dinner in our kitchen. Therefore, my family was on the local news channel for 3 minutes that evening, when everybody was having dinner and not watching the local news.

This year, my sister Grace will fly from Charlottesville to Geneva and spend her Thanksgiving break with our parents. I am still not sure about where to go. Maybe I'll just stay in Carlisle; maybe I'll hang out with the Lin's in Maryland.

Hopefully, I can catch up with my schoolwork over the break, when the library is quiet.

As a Taiwanese, I felt ashamed

A few days ago, I received a forward email titled “A message from Taiwan” through the MLSA list-serve. (MLSA stands for Minority Law Student Association, which is one of the largest student organizations on campus) A guy named David Chou sent the original message to his former professor who teaches at our school.

Here is David Chou’s email--
I studied law at Dickinson in late 1970s. I founded and started the Formosan Statehood Movement I would like to welcome you to visit our new web site, The Movement calls for Taiwan's integration into, and political association with, the United States.
By the way, please let your colleagues/ students/ friends/ relatives, media reporters, town folks/ federal & local government officials/ federal & local judges/ local lawyers you know get a chance to know of our web site.

I know that most people on the MLSA list would just delete this forward message; however, I felt that I had to say something about it because I want people to understand that not all Taiwanese believe in the idea of being the 51st state of America.

Therefore, I replied to the MLSA list-serve as follow—

Dear MLSA members, You can disregard my email if you don't care about the original message, but as a Taiwanese, I respectfully disagree with the idea of the "Formosan Statehood Movement", which calls for Taiwan's integration into, and political associationwith, the United States. Thanks Dorothy Deng

I personally felt ashamed that there are Taiwanese people out there who have the idea of being part of the U.S, but I didn’t want to make personal attacks in a public email. Guess what, I received this replied message through the MLSA list-serve this morning, which made me extremely ANGRY!!

(A public letter to DSL-MLSA Members)
Dear Ms. Deng:
You said you "respectfully disagree" with our Statehood Plan. We must respect your reaction. However, I felt a little bit sorry to say that it seemed to me that you overreacted when you sent your letter to DSL-MLSA.

If you don't mind, please allow me to ask you a very personal question: Are you an American citizen now? If you are an American citizen now or if you intend to reside in the States permanently, please let me suggest you to have a second thought about our Statehood Plan.

There are so many Taiwanese people of the elite class holding U.S. citizenship or permanent residence. Some of these people, however, are not ready to accept and support our statehood proposal so far. Sadly speaking, we do not know why. I hope someone can explain to us someday.

God bless you.
Thomas Chen
Assistant to David Chou

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this email. Someone actually asked me a “very personal question” in a public letter?

Yes I am a U.S. citizen because I was born in the States, and yes I might stay in the U.S., but that doesn’t mean I should support the idea of Taiwan being the 51st state of America.

I could say more about how ridiculous I think this “Statehood Plan”is, but this blog post is too long already and I know you won't continue to read it anyway. Just want to say that as a Taiwanese, I felt not only angry but also ashamed.

Law school lessons

I've learned more than doing legal researches and drafting legal memorandums in law school. Here are some examples:

1. Law school exams—Never ignore counter arguments

When you take a law school exam, never write down answers like, “Yes, A can sue B” or “A will win the case". No matter how strong your arguments are for one side, there must be counter arguments for another side, or other sides. There is just no single answer to real life situations.

2. Classroom participations—Confidence comes from serious preparation

First year law students often panic when professors use the so-called “Socratic Method” in class, meaning the professor will start questioning a student once the student opens his or her mouth. The reality is that you won’t embarrass yourself in front of your classmates as long as you sound confident. Keep in mind that nobody can be confident without serious preparation.

3. Job search—Find the right match

Searching for a job is like searching for a boyfriend. If the job thinks you are not good enough for it, that job is not good. Jobs that pay well are not always the best choice either. All you need is to find the right match, which is a job that makes you special and happy.

4. Coffee—Necessary evil

Take a look at my schedule

--Outline Advocacy assignment
--Corporations: Read pp139-170
--International Trade: Read pp340-368; GATT Art XXIII
--Writing and Editing: Test on parts of speech
--1:00~5:00 Work at Harrisburg
--6:00 APALSA meeting
--Gym: Chest/Abs

When you don't have time to sleep, Coffee is a necessary evil.

The worst one was losing my boarding pass half an hour before boarding. I eventually got onboard, but at one point I really thought I wasn’t getting on the plane.

Some situations are unavoidable though, such as having babies around. I used to feel sorry for those parents, now I truly admire them. Oh, another annoying thing is having messy hair after being on the airplane for 12+ hours.

So now I always bring earplugs and a pair of sunglasses while air-traveling. Earplugs are good for blocking the noise; sunglasses can 1) keep unwanted light away while resting and 2) make me feel ok about my messy hair.

My other recommendation is to order low-fat meals. Besides eating healthier, you get the meal earlier and avoid the bathroom rush later on. For most airlines, if you didn't request a special meal while booking the ticket, you can do so 24 hours before departure.

Choices for special meals usually include vegetarian, low-sodium, kids’ meal, maybe law-carbs? I personally think low-fat meals taste better than normal meals. I wouldn’t order a kid’s meal for my kid if I ever have one though. French fries and chicken fingers are not good for kids.

By the way, I am extremely lucky this time to fly in Econ Plus class with an empty seat next to me.

Subway

Two people stopped me while I was approaching Metro Center after work today.
They asked, "Is there a subway around?"
I pointed at Metro Center: "the metro station is right in front of us."

They paused for 3 seconds and said,

"Oh, we are looking for a Subway...where you can buy subs"

Do you want to sit?"

突然有個人小聲的說，"你剛是不是睡著了..." my link to Seetoo's blog)

I am damn lucky to get this summer job--Working as a temporary summer law clerk at a DC law firm, which is located next to the White House and neighboring tons of other law firms. Having approximately 120 attorneys (not including their staff), the firm is considered a medium-sized DC firm.

The office is beautiful and spacious. There are lots of artworks, big conference rooms, and free Starbucks coffee. The service is great too--If the attorneys need to copy something, there are professional copying staff to do the job. If the attorneys work overtime, the food department will deliver dinner to their room.

Basically, the attorneys only worry about their billable hours, so the firm can charge its clients.

So, who are the clients?

While Seetoo's clients are poor delinquent juveniles, our clients are mostly rich corporations. A lot of them have famous company names that everybody has heard of.

Far from feeling sentimental, it is hard for me to get emotionally involved while dealing with our clients' matters. After all, they are not even real humans.

At the end of the day, our clients, being very rich and powerful to begin with, become even richer and more powerful with the help of our legal services. But what happens to those poor delinquent juveniles?
